Graun im Vinschgau

, ,

Graun in Vinschgau/Curon Venosta is famous for the sunken church in its lake. The Venosta valley lies high up in the Alps in the border zone of Italy, Austria and Switzerland. Until 1918 it was in Austria, now it’s a devolved province of Italy, although the people still speak Austrian German as their native language. The lower area of the village was flooded in the 1940s to create a hydroelectric reservoir, and the church spire is the only thing that remains of the old streets. At an altitude of 1520m, the lake freezes solid in the winter. An Italian Netflix show called Curon was filmed there, but it’s not very good.

This photo makes me think of the Left Hand of Darkness.

Someone kindly built a scale model in a flower trough.

WONDERFUL! Had no idea a submerged church even existed!
