The Kiel Canal joins the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic at Kiel, and is one of the major freight shipping routes in Europe. Using the canal cuts off having to go hundreds of miles round the whole Jutland Peninsula, and avoids the rough seas and treacherous sand banks of the Skagerrak and Kattegat straights between Denmark and Sweden. On average ninety freight ships sail up the canal every day.
Although it’s a heavy industrial zone, the canal at Brunsbüttel is also scenic, and an ideal spot for field recording.
