Misc Bratislava

There’s also a lot to do outside the Old Town.

I was sitting on this roof terrace of the guest house, when a work friend texted me to ask if I was still in town, because she was there for the afternoon. It turned out I could see her across the street.

We went to this pub. It’s literally just called Slovak Pub.

This is my favourite spot, across the street from Big Tesco. Holy Grail combo of good cheap vegetarian food, and opposite a laundrette. Getting clean clothes can be tricky on the road.

Cash only, assortment of Vietnamese tofu meals. Everything is under €7. There’s a big Vietnamese community in the former Czechoslovakia, who came as refugees from the Vietnam War. Nowadays excellent Vietnamese food is everywhere in both countries.

Bratislava train station is the place time forgot. There are occasional updates like the “vegan snack”. I think the stern elderly ladies who mind the toilets there were prison guards in a previous life. The luggage man is still there, who will mind your case in his cupboard for €2. His frequent tea breaks are sacred and set in stone since the 70s. Don’t even think of trying to leave something there at that time.

At least now they’re listed on the website, and you don’t have to rely on the photo you took of the sign last time you were there. 6.30 – 6:45, 10:45 – 11:15, 17:00 – 17:15, 21:30 – 21:45.

They have a love of displaying baguettes vertically in this part of the world.

Chobotnice is a great word. Literally “tentacle thing”. An elephant trunk is also a chobot.

Extremely 90s bathroom in a hotel I stayed in.

The Pharmacology department of the university.

The students add their name to the pavement outside when they graduate.

I got this book “The Gravedigger’s Almanac” just because I liked the design so much. Oliver Pötzsch is German, and some of his books are available in English, but not this one. The original German edition wasn’t half so nice. Czech and Slovak editions of books are often a lot nicer in general.
