The river Rhine marks the border between Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Most people’s mental image of the river is of its huge lower stretches in Germany. Upstream in Liechtenstein before it picks up extra water from the Bodensee, it’s not so big.

I always feel like I need a sackcloth smock and a bell to ring and shout Unclean! Unclean! when crossing this bridge.

Ready to lug my sack of turnips across to market in Switzerland. Liechtenstein’s modern industries are money laundering and false teeth.

When you cross the bridge, there’s nothing much on the Swiss side. The next village is a bit of a walk.
