Horn im Waldviertel

,

Here’s some older pictures of Horn in northern Austria, a remote place that’s hard to reach in the winter. It’s much closer to Brno in the Czech Republic than anywhere in Austria (although good luck trying to travel between the two on public transport). To get there, you have to get a normal train to Sigmundsherberg, which is already in the middle of nowhere, then change to this 1980s single car tram thing that then trundles through the dense forest and deep snow. It’s either completely empty, or full of soldiers going to the army camp nearby. There’s supposed to be a new line and direct trains sometime soon.

Austrian German is a beautiful language. Krapfen are Mardi Gras donuts.

This was the main place to eat in town in the winter, the Poststüberl Horn the “Post Office Parlour”. Most times when I was in there, there was the same old man sat at this special seat at the bar. It’s still there as far as I can tell online, but has zero online presence.

The town is really small, but when you’re trudging through deep ungritted snow everything takes twice as long.
